There are so many skin care products in the market today that come with a lot of hype. The same holds true for skin care tips as well. Skin care tips and skin care products are everywhere these days. That is why it's kind of tricky to determine what's real and what's effective from what's not. With the help of some experts, let me share to you some of the top skin care myths that I'm sure most of us are guilty of.
1. Skin care should be a 3-step routine : cleanse-tone-moisturize.
Not all skin types are suited for this 3 step skin care routine. People with dry skin can opt to skip the toner as this may dry their skin more. People with oily skin on the other hand can find toners beneficial to their skin because it reduces oil and shine. It's really a case to case basis depending on the type of skin one has. Personally, I think all you really need is just a good cleanser and moisturizer.
2. There's no need to wear sunscreen on a cloudy day.
The sun's UV rays can still penetrate the earth even on a cloudy day. Therefore, it's important to wear sunscreen even though it's not sunny outside.
3. There's no need to wear sunscreen if you're wearing makeup with SPF.
You would need to put on 15 times the normal amount of makeup to be able to reach the SPF indicated on the makeup label. Therefore, you still need to put on sunscreen prior to putting on your makeup even if your makeup has SPF.
4. Exfoliating your face twice a week will keep your skin healthy and acne free.
Scrubbing your face could strip off the skin's natural oils which can cause dryness and even redness. It's best to stick to a gentle cleanser for everyday use and exfoliate at least twice a month.
5. The more expensive a product, the more effective it is.
There are a lot of over the counter skin care products at the drugstore that are better than high end ones. These products usually have the same active ingredients anyway. However, if you want to pay extra for the smell and the luxe packaging, that's entirely up to you.
6. Anti wrinkle creams can erase wrinkles from your face.
Anti aging creams only hydrate the skin which in effect plumps it and makes it appear "younger". It doesn't erase wrinkles from the face. As they say magic only happens in fairytale and not in real life. You can only slow down the appearance of wrinkles, but you can't totally stop it.
7. It's okay to skip the moisturizer if you have oily or acne prone skin.
There are moisturizers specially formulated for different skin types such as oily skin. Furthermore, most moisturizers today are non-comedogenic so they don't clog pores and cause acne. Just make sure to use a moisturizer suitable for your skin type to achieve best results.
