It goes without saying that sunscreen is one of the most important essentials one must have this summer. Aside from protecting our skin from the harmful rays of the sun and the diseases that come along with it, it also helps us achieve that healthy looking tan. It's one of the easiest and the most affordable way to protect your skin this summer. However, with the wide array of sunscreen choices in the market today, choosing one could be quite overwhelming for some. So to make things simpler, let me share to you some tips on how to choose the right sunscreen for your skin.

1. Make sure the sunscreen that you will buy has these ingredients : Zinc oxide, Oxybenzone, Titanium dioxide, Avobenzone and Sulisobenzone. These ingredients offer full spectrum protection which means, it blocks both UVA and UVB. Always choose a sunscreen which is both effective against ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) light. Most sunscreens only offer protection against UVB rays so be careful and read the label carefully. Your sunscreen must block both UVA and UVB rays.

2. If you're planning to stay more than 4 hours under the sun, choose a sunscreen which offers a sun protection factor (SPF) 30 or higher. Take note that the SPF number only indicates how effective the sunscreen is against UVB light.

3. Choose your sunscreen based on your activities and lifestyle. Like for example, if you're planning to do a lot of water sports and sweaty activities this summer, you need to choose a water resistant sunscreen. Most sunscreens, if not all, loses its effectivity to some extent when the skin is soaked in water. Water resistant sunscreens have ingredients which help the product stick to the skin. But take note that even if you use a water resistant sunscreen, you still need to reapply it every hour or so to make sure that you stay protected.

4. Just like any beauty product, if you have an oily skin, or an acne prone skin, choose a sunscreen which has an oil free base so that it won't clog your pores. There are a lot of sunscreen that caters to different types of skin so choose accordingly.

5. If you're the type of person who's allergic to all sorts of stuff, it's best to choose a PABA free sunscreen. Para-AminoBenzoic Acid (PABA) has been known to cause allergic reactions to some people. So those people with allergies should stick with PABA free sunscreens to avoid attacks.
